Ralph Ansel Vegas Lights

"While reading Red River's information on their new card paper, I clicked on your link about BOKAH taken in Las Vegas, and enjoyed the image of OOF Lights," writes Ralph Ansel. "During my visit to Las Vegas, I did some photos of lights at the candy factory's decorated cactus garden. I used a Canon 5D MarkII, Canon 24-70mm f2.8 at about f8 in Aperture Priority mode. I adjusted the lens opening to get a 1 to 2 sec. shutter speed and zoomed the lens during the exposure."

Nice shot, Ralph! I think the effect is striking.

"This is an HDR shot with a Canon 60D using a Canon wide-angle 10-22mm at 10mm and the ISO set to 800," writes Keith Burrows. "I used Aperture 3 and HDR Pro plugin by NIK software."

"This section of beach was lit by giant spotlights from atop the seaside condos behind me. It almost made the water look like it had an underwater pool light illuminating it. I shot quite a few that night and will post them soon on my new photography site.

"The photo was taken in Lower Antelope Canyon (Utah) and shows the detail of Navajo sandstone," writes Chris Cornelis. "Wind and water have carved out beautiful shapes with amazing texture."

Antelope Canyon - Chris Cornelis "Lower Antelope Canyon" (Utah) by Chris Cornelis

"When I entered the canyon I was overwhelmed. I started taking photos like crazy, resulting in a lot of mediocre photos and a couple of pretty good ones. I like this one a lot because it captures the essence of what makes the canyon so beautiful (color, shape, texture), and at the same time, it's a very simple image."

"Tiny Hands" - Grab Shot 207

michael_cortina_gs.jpg "I spend a lot of my time as an amateur photographer taking photos of my two grandboys," writes Michael Cortina. "They are my favorite subjects, and my wife uses the pics in her scrap-booking and brag-books."

"This an over the shoulder picture of my 11-month old Cristian. He is close to walking, so he spends a lot of time playing at the coffee table for stability."

"I snapped this shot with my Nikon D300s and a 50mm 1.8 lens. It was taken wide open at 1/200 in natural window light at ISO 3200."

"Lady in Red" - Grab Shot 206

Jimmy Brown Grab Shot "I am a rather shy photographer, and I have difficulty taking photos of people," writes Jimmy Brown. "But I am pleased with this candid photo of my wife. I titled it "Lady in Red."

"We were parked in a small cemetery up in Canada. I was throwing sticks for the dog when a light rain began to fall. I noticed the car window starting to fog up and saw my opportunity to capture an unorthodox portrait. I hope you enjoy this photo."

"Wasp Meal" - Grab Shot 205

"As winter was getting nearer in Madrid, the last insects were running for their lives," writes Michel Bricteux. "So was this wasp, feeding on cured ham. Note the wasp's tongue between the two mandibules shaped to cut the food."

Doug Peek Grab Shot

My brother-in-law and I were in downtown Chicago with the rest of our family walking around," writes Doug Peek. "He had his Nikon and I was armed with my Canon."

"We were exploring south on Michigan Avenue late in the afternoon when we passed by this alley. It had such a spectacular lighting pattern that I had to "grab" the shot. A slider here and a slider there in Lightroom, and this is the result."

Thinking on it though, makes it even a more unusual image. The lighting pattern is from the sun reflecting off the mirrored glass from the building on the other side of Michigan Avenue. Not cool enough though. This pattern is unique in that it will only appear during a certain time of year. Sometimes you just have to take the shot when you see it."

Tim Tilden Grab Shot

"Several years ago I became friends with the local Hang Glider pilots here on Oahu," writes Tim Tilden. "They launch from a spot on a ridge 1100 ft above the beach. Using trucks, they drive their gliders up to the launch, and since I live nearby, I volunteer to drive the pickups down to the landing zone."

"While they fly, I take pictures. I've become a visual chronicler of many of their flights. I ended up creating a site on Smugmug to allow them to see how good they look!"

"On Halloween Sunday, I was at the Landing Zone taking pictures of their landings, and the landings of the paragliders who use the same LZ. A paraglider pilot alerted me to a parachutist, who was about to jump from a paraglider high above the LZ. Quickly changing to my long zoom, a Tokina 80-400mm, I got this shot moments after her leap from the glider. She landed safely."

"Wild Fire Hose" - Grab Shot 202

Fire Hose by Matthew Heun, originally uploaded by The Digital Story.

"Every Fall, I invite local firefighters to our campus where they demonstrate hydraulics principles to my Junior mechanical engineering students,'" writes Matthew Heun. "The highlight of the hour is the opportunity for each student to assist a firefighter on the hose. I was shooting for several minutes with the sun at my back. Then, I took a chance to shoot almost directly into the sun and was rewarded for the effort."

"I used my trusty Nikon D50 with its stock 18-55 mm lens at 18 mm, 1/640, f/8. I fitted the lens with a circular polarizing filter to deepen the blue sky and make the water really stand out. I think the structure of the spray is quite striking against the distant clouds."

"Money Hound" - Grab Shot 201

money_hound.jpg

"I looked over and saw that my dog had gotten a hold of my money, then curled up and gone to sleep," writes Em Cohen. "I always keep my camera within reach because these are the types of photo opportunities that I'd hate to miss! She did wake up when I turned on the camera, but she quickly fell back to sleep, allowing me to capture what I was after to begin with :)."
